We love Date Bars!! I have had these most of my life. Our dear family friend, Millie, gave this recipe to my mom and we have made them ever since. I was always captivated at Christmas with all the cookies that we would make.
Millie inspired me to do lots of different cookies. She always had a display of cookies set out on beautiful, towered plates; it was magical to this little girl.
My mom and I spent hours poring over cookie recipes out of our Betty Crocker cookbook, as well as all the recipes we would get from all over. Momma always allowed me to try new cookies, she inspired me to bake and be adventurous in my baking. Today I have at least a thousand recipes, I spend hours going over them and putting my recipes in order, ready for the holiday bake-a-thon.
This year is the first year in my life I will be baking without my precious mom. This recipe and all others I will post this year are in honor of my biggest supporter and best friend, my mom, Barbara. I hope you will try these Date Bars; you will love them!
- 2 cups Crisco (no butter for these)
- 4 cups sugar
- 8 eggs
- 4 teaspoons vanilla
- 2 teaspoons salt
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 4 cups flour
- 2 8-ounce packages chopped dates
- 2 cups chopped walnuts

First, prepare your sheet pan. Spray well, then also prepare an 8×8 pan, as this recipe makes a full sheet pan and an 8×8 pan.
Now preheat your oven to 350*
Now place your Crisco and sugar into your mixer bowl. Now whip with a paddle till light and fluffy. Now add your eggs, blend well. Now add the vanilla, salt baking powder and flour. Mix well. Now add the dates and nuts, blend well.
Now time to place the batter into the pans.

Now place the pans in the hot oven and bake for 20-25 minutes. The bars will be slightly fluid in the middle, but will firm up as they cool.

Allow the bars to cool, then cut as shown. Then cover with powdered sugar. I use a sifter and put a very heavy coating.

Now grab a cup of coffee, some bars and enjoy!
