These are old fashioned Nutmeg Sugar Cookies. This is one of the first recipes I found on my own, when I was 12. They have become a big hit in my family and my customers have loved them as well.
When mom and I started baking them together, we had the best time preparing the cherries by cutting each one in half, setting them aside then mixing the dough. It is a delicious cookie that has the old-fashioned flavor of nutmeg. The maraschino cherry in the middle is my favorite! You can also use spindles instead of cherries. I scoop the cookie, place it in my hand, then dip the cookie into the sprinkle of choice. This way the sprinkles get onto the cookie and not the sheet pan! This is one of my personal all-time favorites, and just may become yours as well!
- 1 cup Crisco shortening
- 2 cups sugar
- 4 eggs
- 4 Tablespoons milk
- 4 cups flour
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1 jar maraschino cherries, drained and cut in half

Preheat your oven to 375*
Prepare your sheet pans either with parchment of silicon baking mats.
Prepare your cherries by draining them, then cutting them in half, set aside.
Place your shortening and sugar into your mixer bowl. Whip till light and fluffy. Now add your eggs and the milk, mix well. Now add the rest of the ingredients and mix well.
Now scoop your cookies onto your sheet, then place a cherry half in the middle and press lightly.

Now place your cookies in the oven and bake 10 minutes. I bake 2 sheets at a time. Now remove the cookies from the oven, let them cool for about 10 minutes, then transfer the cookies to a cooling rack and cool completely.

Now grab a cup of coffee, a few cookies and enjoy!
